Roots Rehearsing bands, musical instruments and wires all over the place, the stage, the smell of the red velvet curtains, numerous concerts: Great memories of my childhood. of the club, ran by my parents. There I breathed in and out the live atmosphere of music and theatre.
Study: Back then it was called: Improvised music- main subject singing; at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. It was fertile soil for my musical and personal growth: all about being adventurous and renewing with well known musical structures. Free spirited so to say. Here I also started writing music: my internal need to create and express.
Singer: Aretha Franklin, Chaka Kahn, Gladys Knight, Betty Carter, Miles, Sarah Vaughan: thank you for being so inspiring! My very first band was, YES, a soulband. From then on I sang jazz, soul, pop, blues. In various formations, from duo to bigband; in clubs, theatres, festivals; throughout Europe. I worked with well known producers in studio's, sang leaders for TV programs. Formed a band with Michiel Borstlap, Anton Drukker, Joost Lijbaart. We recorded my CD "in the palm of my hand", released in 1996, which included original compositions: contemporary jazz. We performed at the North sea jazz festival, theatres and jazzclubs. What an inspiration that band was!

So after I graduated at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. I was asked to start teaching singing, Jazz, at that very same school.
And I still do so ever since. Over the years I also gave workshops/masterclasses.
Important for me as a singer and composer, as well as in what I teach my students is: what is your true thrill in a song, in music, in your voice, in playing with your fellow musicians, and how do you share that thrill with your audience.
Composer/lyricist: So my CD "In the palm of my hand" was my "contemporary Jazz"- period of writing: lyrics, not about romantic love, but about my personal insights, the music was adventurous and intellectual and full of ENERGY. Then I wrote crossover- soul and jazz and also pop songs. Over the years I developed more and more a "from the gut"- style of writing and singing and performing. And now here it is:

Het was een vruchtbare grond voor mijn musikale en Persoonlijke ontwikkeling: Het ging allemaal om samenspelen , communiceren, avontuurlijk en vernieuwend zijn binnen de bekende musikale strukturen. Mijn eerste band was JAWEL een soul band; we speelden alle grote soulclassics. Daarna zong ik jazz, soul, pop. In veel verschillende formaties; van duo tot bigband. In clubs, theaters, festivals, binnen en buitenland. Werkte met bekende producers in studio, zong leaders voor TV programma’s. Formeerde een band met Michiel Borstlap, Anton Drukker, Joost Lijbaart. We namen mijn CD "in the palm of my hand" op, die gereleased werd in 1996, Hierop staan voornamelijk eigen composities: contemporary Jazz. We hebben getourd langs de jazzclubs en gespeeld op het North sea jazz festival. Wat een superinspirerende band was dat! Zangcoach: Na mijn afstuderen werd ik direkt gevraagd aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam les te geven. Natuurlijk deed ik dat! Door de jaren heen heb ik veel masterclasses en workshops gegeven: in Nederland, Belgie, Liechtenstein, Noorwegen. Belangrijk voor mij als vocaliste en componiste, en wat ik ook mijn studenten wil bijbrengen is: wat is de echte thrill van een song, de muziek, je stem, van het spelen met je medemusici, en hoe deel je die thrill met je publiek. Ik heb sindsdien veel crossover-soul en jazz en pop geschreven. En door de jaren heen heb ik meer en meer een "from the gut"-stijl van schrijven, zingen en performen ontwikkeld.
